Synopsis: High school student Lee Seung-cheon ( Yook Sung-jae ), popularly known as “Dirty Spoon”, is the son of a poor family. He hates his life and dreams someday he can gets out of the poor environment.

One day he meets an old woman who makes him an offer. For only three dollars, she offers to buy a golden spoon from her. The spoon has a magical property – if Seung-cheon eats 3 meals with this gold spoon with someone his age at their house, that person’s parents will then become his parents.”

Seung-cheon decides to take a chance and dine at the house of his wealthy friend and classmate Hwang Tae-young, the son of a large company owner.

  1. This was not what I had expected.
    *Spoiler alert*
    I watched this drama because I thought the plot was appealing. However, I must say I ended up being bored for the majority of the time as it ended up being more about a love square. Personally I am not all into romance dramas and that is also going to be reflected in *my* review. For me, this drama was on life support for a good chunk of it’s running and I found it to be too unnecessarily long. This drama could probably have been wrapped up just as nicely in 12 episodes and I actually thought of it as a drag that just wouldn’t end – especially as nothing really happened in the episodes that added to the plot or would drive the plot to progress, thus what I’m trying to say is that it was a slow progressing drama leaning into slice-of-life. However, this drama had some really good plot twists. First and foremost realizing that there was more than one golden spoon going around and that there was a lot of hidden rules attached to using it was quite the revelation and secondly that Hwang Hyeondo actually had used the spoon himself to grant himself a position where he could pursue his greed for money and power. I think this was a very clever twist and something that really carves out Hwang Hyeondo’s personality for the viewer. I appreciate that we get to know Hwang Hyeondo’s past and I appreciate that he had figured out that Lee Seungcheon and Hwang Taeyong had switched but still chose to accept Lee Seungcheon as his new son as he understood Lee Seungcheon’s same greed for money and perhaps he saw himself in him. But what surprised me the most and what I also love the most about this drama was that despite being given three chances to go back to his old life with a loving family, not to mention the fact that Na Juhee said so herself that she wanted him to go back to his old self so they could finally be together, he *still* chose to live the rest of his short life as Hwang Taeyong. In most dramas the main character always end up changing their personality and priorities because of a love interest. It was a pleasant surprise to see that Lee Seungcheon stuck to who he was and what he wanted from the beginning. On the other hand the actual Hwang Taeyong agreed to give up his status, his riches and his life to live on as Lee Seungcheon. I think it’s quite important to understand why they both chose to live their lives as they did. Lee Seungcheon came from a very loving but poor family where he had every emotional need met, but his family was always indebted to someone making Lee Seungcheon a subject to bullying and submission having seen what kind of dark power money holds which fostered his drive and greed to one day work himself in a position of financial freedom regardless of the sacrifices. Whereas, Hwang Taeyong had realized the opposite. Hwang Taeyong had every materialistic need met growing up but all his emotional needs were neglected and thus what he really longed for was a safe and loving home having realized that *that* would be able to define his actual richness and happiness. He had grown up around money and greed. He had grown up seeing the darker sides of having too much money, the chokehold it could have on lesser fortunate families and all the sacrifices that would be made off of other families dispenses in a way that repulsed him and made him seek away from money. In this drama Hwang Tawyong suffers from anxiety and I think the series did a great job at portraying anxiety and panic attacks and how it completely incapacitates and consumes you. I genuinely think it saved him to live as Lee Seungcheon. He was able to start healing, he was able to start facing his traumas and more importantly he was able to start trusting himself and his experiences as he had been a victim of gaslighting, bullying and manipulation. You can only face these dark truths in a loving, accepting and understanding environment. I think it’s a great example of always longing for what you dont have without realizing that you might have something, someone else will go look for for their entire lives. But perhaps the biggest shock was that they actually killed off Lee Seungcheon. Granted it was the final episode but I couldn’t believe it and I was certain he was going to wake up in the ambulance and all of this just were an attempt to trick Hwang Hyeondo into thinking he was dead so he could live freely. The ending was definitely bittersweet with Lee Seungcheon’s soul living on in the gardeners body but without any memories of ever having been anyone else and I can only guess and hope that had they grown a friendship, Na Juhee would have been able to recognize Lee Seungcheon thus answering his prayer and setting him free. On a more positive side, all ends were tied nicely and everyone got punished for their wrongdoings. It was quite symbolic to see Lee Seungcheon’s and Hwang Hyeondo’s greed for money ending up killing or incapacitating them in the end, having chased money and freedom their entire lives. Something that I appreciate is that all the characters that I was waiting for to get romantically involved finally got around to doing so in the end which was a very sweet gesture for the viewers although it also serves to add insult to injury that the very couple we all rooted for throughout this series was robbed of a happily ever after.

    All in all a drama with a bittersweet ending and a clear message.
