  2. Hi Mick. Try watching ‘The Great Show’ – I really enjoyed this drama. It’s different from the run of the mill K-drama.Here’s the

    Synopsis:

Wie Dae-Han is an ex-lawmaker and is a materialistic kind of politician. He wants to get elected as lawmaker again. One day, 18-year-old girl Da-Jung comes to him. She tells him that he is her real father. Her mother raised four children, including Da-Jung, alone, but she died in a hit-and-run accident. Da-Jung is the only one now taking care of her 3 younger siblings. Wie Dae-Han accepts Da-Jung and her 3 younger siblings. He carries out “The Great Show” to become a lawmaker

  3. I’m rarely disappointed with K-Dramas that I choose to watch; and that’s mainly because I’m quite selective with the types of K-Drama series, or movies that I invest my time in. After watching four episodes, I only have this to say:

Throughout the story, so far, it really seems like the writers are struggling to take what was a great idea; and build upon it in a way that is interesting. The character development and storyline development are far too slow; and even stunted.

I don’t fault the actors, because it really seems like all the issues stem from the storyline right through production. If there was more definition of the story and character backgrounds, then acting can make, or break the overall product.

After four episodes, I’m left wanting more. More character development. More episodes, because there’s no “ending” to the 4th episode… it just stops; and there’s no conclusion… no closure. I can only wonder how such a great concept can turn out like this. It’s as if they couldn’t get all their oars in the water at the same time. Maybe they’ll put out more episodes? Maybe they’ll pick up the pace? Maybe it will all turn out much better as the episodes keep coming? As it stands, it looks like it’s been more of a crawl to a dead stop.

    1. @Mick umm, there are plenty of online resources to guide you into the best dramas. For dramas finished, check the ratings. I’m not a fan of watching dramas where the ratings go lower throughout the run of episodes. Good writers hook you in by the 1st or 2nd episode. For me, I’ll stop watching if (1) I’m not interested by the end of the 2nd episode and / or (2) the ratings decline from the beginning.

      1. Thanks, Michael. Much appreciated, but I most likely have those resources bookmarked.

My problem is that I’m extremely selective with K-Dramas. On some occasions, I run into one that turns out to be fantastic AND popular, such as:

The Scholar Who Walks at Night
        A Korean Odyssey
        Goblin
        Hotel Del Luna

Then there are times when I end up enjoying something that doesn’t rate as popular with general audiences, but which turn out to be gems in their own right, such as:

        He is Psychometric
        Mooring School
        Nightmare Teacher
        Somehow 18

Sometimes I even run into mini K-Dramas, with 10-15 minute episodes, which turn out to be good enough to warrant much 16-20 1-hr episodes.

I frequently find myself being underwhelmed by the series that are enjoyed by larger audiences. I think it’s because they often feel too contrived; and that it’s because they try too hard to please everyone.

        1. Hello Mick and other commenters-I’m the same and have seen a couple of what you listed and would have to agree. There’s one Kdrama, I think is underrated, that I think is worth watching: Chicago Typewriter.

          1. I’ve been hearing some good things about Chicago Typewriter. It’s definitely on my list of K-Dramas to watch.
